Environmental Assessments of Containerized Housing Units, Naval Station Guantanamo Bay
As part of its Joint Venture (Hana-Bay West 8A JV), Hana was contracted by USACE Savannah District to conduct an environmental assessment (EA) and operational condition assessment (OCA) of 135 containerized housing units (CHUs) on Naval Station Guantanamo Bay (NSGB), Cuba. The team performed the EA to evaluate indoor air quality and other physical parameters in the CHUs against multiple standards to determine whether the CHUs were safe for human occupancy. The indoor air quality assessment was completed by a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and included taking measurements for carbon dioxide (CO2), temperature, relative humidity, carbon monoxide (CO), dust, ultrafine particulate, organic vapors, oxygen, Lower Explosive Limit, and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Samples were collected for formaldehyde, asbestos in bulk samples of building materials, fungi on building materials, airborne fungi, and VOCs in air. Results of the samples were screened against Military Exposure Guidelines (MEGs) values to identify potential risk.
“Top-notch contractor. I highly recommend them for their ability to work in adverse conditions under demanding timelines.”
